We went in to talk about reading. We left talking about writing.

A room full of people at Carelon gave us an hour. We spent it on the attention crisis. Doomscrolling. And the slow erosion of our ability to sit with anything longer than a reel. Our case was the one we always make: books are not nostalgia. They are how we keep our attention whole.

The first questions came as expected. Reader’s block, reading slumps, and finishing long books. Then came a question we weren’t expecting. How do you get past writer’s block?

Something shifted in the room. Because these were people who had come to talk about reading, and somewhere along the way they had begun to write. They had spent enough hours inside other people’s ideas that their own had started to stir. It is simply what happens when you sit with a thought long enough. You stop borrowing ideas. You start growing them.

We did not set out to make writers. But there is a quiet that reading makes room for, and in that quiet, people discover they have something of their own to say.
